Volume 1 - Op. 1 - Op. 15a (4 Disks)
By a curious twist of publishing history, Sor's Op. 1 - Op. 35 are far better known than his later Op. 36 - Op. 60. And this volume contains the best known of these "earlier" works. Certainly practically all guitarists are familiar with and may have played the famous Op. 9 (Mozart Variations), parts of Op. 6 (12 Etudes) and the well-known Op. 14 (Sonata # 1 or better known as "Grand Solo.") Also very well known is the Andantino Op. 2 #3, The Andante Largo Op. 5 #5 and several of the minuets of Op. 11. The rest of these works are far less well known and are rarely performed, but this does not mean that they are of any lesser quality. Of special interest is the beautiful Larghetto Op. 1 #3, the lovely Siciliana Op. 2 #6 and the great Fantasia Op. 12 which critic John Wiser described as having "Schubertian expressive range." This volume also contains several well-known works, notably the single movement Sonata Op. 15b, the two "Grand Sonatas" Op. 22 and Op. 25, the Variations Op. 28 and several of the Etudes from Op. 29. The Fantasia Elegiaque Op. 59 is a much performed work and is undoubtedly one of Sor's finest large works. Equally fine, yet practically unknown are the Morceau de Concert Op. 54 (which contains one of the finest "romantic" sets of variations from that period) and the Fantasia Op. 56 which opens with a ravishing Andante followed by a grand concert waltz. Also La Candeur is an exquisite piece.

TWO SPANISH MASTERS - Lawrence Johnson, guitarist
This CD contains eight of the great vihuelist, Miguel de Fuenllana's Fantasias (1554) and we believe is the most extensive recorded collection of his Fantasias currently available. In our opinion, Fuenllana is one of the greatest of the earlier Spanish masters of counterpoint. We believe his works are equal to other great Spanish masters of the renaissance such as Cristobal de Morales and Tomas Luis de Victoria. The remainder of this CD is devoted to 25 short compositions of Andres Segovia, whose music (with the exception of Estudio Sin Luz) is practically unknown. We believe that these very poetic short works should ultimately become a basic part of the guitar literature.
